Lower Cape Fear River Fishing Charters In Wilmington
The Wilmington NC Cape Fear River shipping channel stretches for dozens of miles upriver past downtown Wilmington. This channel brings in massive water flow rich in river sediment and nutrients that feed copious amounts of shrimp and baitfish. This makes it very easy for predatory fish to keep full. The amazing geography offers mud flats, sand bars, rock deposits, and deep water channels to fish. Sedimentary river rock has been dredged out of the river channel over the years and piled up in shallow water along the many spoil islands. This makes for excellent habitat for sheepshead, black drum, ladyfish, flounder, triple tail, croaker, and bull red drum.
This part of the Wilmington NC Cape Fear is an inshore fisherman’s dream offering the biggest variety of inshore saltwater species around.
Upper Cape Fear River & Downtown Wilmington
In downtown Wilmington, two major river systems intersect to form the upper Cape Fear region of the river. This, by far, is my favorite winter time fishery. With the water cooling down, the striped bass activity turns on; especially on the warmer winter days that heat up the mud flats. Top water fishing in low light can be very action packed for the striper, but can also yield good numbers of redfish and speckled trout when the conditions are right. Another method that produces some of our bigger fish is good ole bottom fishing with cut shad. This method is especially deadly in late winter when the shad are migrating up river. Not only do we catch monster striper bottom fishing, but every year we get some blue cats in the 40 to 60 pound range that are true river monsters.
All of this can be done within eye sight of beautiful downtown Wilminington.
